YouTube . . . My Generation!

Cecilia again (boy, am I glad somebody is asking questions)!

Q: How do I add a YouTube feed to my page. I've tried, but somehow it doesn't seem to want to display!

A: Follow these steps.

1. Find the video clip on the YOUTUBE site - NOT the clip you've seen being streamed on somebody else's page.

2. This is what you need to copy:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. This is a 'before' and 'after' of the same code snippet. You can see where I've added the tags to center the YouTube window. You can achieve the same thing by using the 'Compile' or WYSIWYG feature.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The following is an excerpt taken from the blurb that accompanied the release of this video clip:

The oldest and greatest rock band in the world - meet The Zimmers and their amazing cover of The Who's "My Generation".

The single was painstakingly recorded between band members having to sit out sections due to treatment for various medical problems. One fainted in over-excitement before she even reached the studios.

Lead singer Alf is 90 - it's quite something when he snarls, 'Hope I die before I get old' and then a little later kicks over a drumkit. Winifred Warburton is 99 and thrashes away at the keyboard. Buster Martin, 100, is the oldest working man in Britain. You have to watch until the end to see his tour de force.

Tim Samuels, the documentary-maker responsible for this event says, "They are all enjoying the rock and roll ride in a very understated way. Some of them might not be able to stand for too long as their knees might give them a bit of gyp, but they are all sprightly enough."

Altogether, they are a formidable bunch!

I hope you gained something from the 'tute', but that you enjoyed the YouTube clip more!

Come back again soon.

Thank you Terry..

I figured out how to add the snapshots thing. Yes it was indeed a "snap". Will find more questions for you...

cheers,
Cecilia

NP, Cecilia. I noticed you'd already added the SnapShots. Yup, it's good to get a 'preview' of what the link refers to (must say thanks to b.t.bear(esq.)).

Take a leap at Thickbox. It will certainly make a difference to how your pics display.

Terry,

I did it! Added 2 YouTube videos! Cool. Now I have something new on my blog. Was thinking this could be a regular feature, I ahve a teenage daughter who discovers loads of new bands...

thanks loads!

Cecilia
PS. Will try thickbox a little later, looks really daunting to me....

Good one!

Thickbox only LOOKS complicated (probably because of all the bits of code), but it isn't.

And if you insert all the CSS into the template, you even get a bonus of being able to use the large 'Drop Capital' letter at the beginning of a post, because I've included my own code in that batch!

El Tel,

Nice post. Great to see this blog develop the interactive nature it will serve so well.

In a few hours, I'll re-direct a question to you.

Will also post a link to your YouTube tute. Watch for the headline - I think you'll approve.

Cheers

David

I guess it's the nature of the web - "don't know where I've come from, don't know where I'm going" - BUT if you've bookmarked this site, then you've done the right thing.

In any case, enjoy what's on offer. That's what it was set up for!

David,

Looking forward to what else you're going to drop in my lap!

Seriously - enjoying pitting my wits against the 'probs' so far. I've even managed to get a post in on the FLOG.

Hi Terry,
I'm going to try getting youtube vid in my blog. Where do I need to copy and paste the embed from youtube? Can I use notepad? Thanks for answering my newb questions, and I really lyike this blog you have.

Regards,

John

Hi John,

Notepad is fine to paste 'txt' files into and to work on them.

Follow the instructions I posted and after you've 'edited' the code that Youtube gives you, paste it wherever you want the display to show up.

It would help to have an 'explanatory' sentence or two preceding the Youtube insert so that your visitors have an idea of what it is they are about to watch.

Good luck, and get back to me immediately if you continue to have a problem.

BTW, 'newb' questions is what this site is all about. If there weren't any questions it could just dry up and disappear . . .!!

OK, I tried to paste the code in the blog entry and a message saying my HTML Tag is broken and cannot be accepted. I don't know what I did wrong here> The entire code did not get pasted in the entry. Am I supposed to copy and paste after adding in the coe you added?

OK getting closer now, Terry. I figured out that I needed to write my blog post in Edit HTML. Yold you I'm a newb ;) One more hurdle to clear. When I try to post the entry I get a message saying : "Closing tag has no matching opening tag". It's highlightng the very end of the code between the "height350" and the /embed part.

John,

emailed you, but will amplify things in this comment thread when we've sorted the little blighter!

That'll be for the sake of anybody else that is suffering from the same problem and following the thread.

I was determined to make this thing work, so I started all over and made sure I copied the code you added correctly this time. I think that's what the problem was. Well, lo and behold it worked! Thank you for all your help, Terry. Now, onto the thickbox.....

John

Hey John,

ROTFLMAO!

Thickbox - go for it. Don't forget to make a backup of your current template so that you can put it back if things go awry!

I'd be delighted to hear that you've been successful!

Yes, I'm going to attempt it. If I fail I will do as the British and " Bash on, regardless!"
